About the Authors

Get to know your co-authors, Heidi van Beek and Cindi Sreetharan.

Co-author Heidi van Beek is the Assistant Director of University Honors Program at the University of California, Davis. In this role, Heidi advises and supports students completing the university’s Honors General Education curriculum. This elite program provides a select group of students the opportunity to engage with research faculty in small classes at the start of their university experience. Previously, she was the Coordinator of First Year Advising and the First Year Experience Peer Mentors at the California State University, Sacramento. The department serves more than 2,500 first year students annually. Heidi also trained and supervised the advising faculty in the university’s Academic Advising and Career Center where she met her co-author, Cindi Sreetharan.

Heidi has served as an advisor in higher education for more than ten years, including international programs where she has prepared hundreds of students for experiential learning, and supervised them in Korea, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. Heidi holds a MA in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico.

Heidi believes that in higher education there is never a one size fits all solution and that every student can be successful when prepared with the right resources.

Heidi is originally from the Midwest and now makes her home in Sacramento, California.

Co-author Cindi Sreetharan holds a Doctorate in Anthropology from the University of California, Davis. Her area of study has influenced her belief that all students should be provided with the cultural tools that will enable them to navigate their college experience successfully.

Cindi is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Arizona State University in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change; prior to this she was part of the Anthropology faculty at CSU Sacramento, where she taught for more than ten years. Cindi has lived and studied extensively in Asia, speaks Japanese and is learning Malay; she is part of the board of directors of a US-Japan educational exchange nonprofit organization.

In addition to teaching classes in Anthropology, Cindi has served as College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies DEGREES Advisor at California State University, Sacramento, where she met her co-author, Heidi van Beek.

An Oregon native, Cindi lives with her husband and two daughters in Scottsdale, Arizona.
